While Nobel Prize winner Tomas Tranströmer is an exquisite Swedish poet, Werner Aspenström is probably one of the most underrated in my country. His poems are mesmerizing, haunting, beautiful. I decided to put his poem ‘Ej blir det natt’ (There Will Not Be Night) to music as the lyrics spoke to my heart in a very straight-forward way. The piece was premiered by Johannebergs Vokalensemble as part of a programme for the Feast of Christ the King on November 20, 2011. Ultimately, the piece is about death and hope, and proved to work beautifully as a part of the choir’s repertorie on this special day. – Mikael Carlsson, January 2012
