“The gorgeous music does the talking…” (RTE)

The Man in the Hat (Stephen Warbeck)

MovieScore Media teams up with Oscar-winner Stephen Warbeck in a most unusual project in the composer’s career – The Man in the Hat is not only scored by him, but Warbeck is also the co-writer and co-director of the project together with John Paul Davidson. Starring Ciarán Hinds in the titular role, the film follows our hero as he journeys through France in a Fiat 500 accompanied by a framed photograph of an unknown woman and being pursued by five angry men in a Citroën Dyane…

”We wanted to create a journey for our audience structured around the music,” explains Stephen Warbeck about the film. “With almost no dialogue in the film, the music is afforded uch greater prominence and almost forms an additional character in the narrative. Ciarán Hinds leads our cast with a very soulful performance and The Man In The Hat is very affected by music. Through the score we explore his happiness or melancholy and tune in to when he feels threatened or liberated. The soundtrack also includes live filmed performances by Mark Padmore and the Nadine Lee Band, which were recorded on location during principal photography, and the characters’ response to the music that we captured was real and spontaneous. Bringing live performance on to the set enabled us to add to the magic of the heightened world somewhere between a dream, a memory, a performance and reality.”

Born in 1953 in Southampton, British composer Stephen Warbeck has worked on over 100 different feature films and television projects. His best-known score was arguably written for John Madden’s Shakespeare in Love (1998) for which he won one of the film’s seven Academy Awards in the category of Best Music, Original Musical or Comedy Score. Some of his other credits include the underscore for the musical hit Billy Elliot (2000), the De Sade biopic Quills (2000) and the math mystery drama Proof (2005). The composer’s previous releases with MovieScore Media include Princess Ka’iulani (2009), a historical drama about a Hawaiian princess’ attempt to maintain the independence of the islands against colonization and the dark comedy I’ll Bury You (2014).
