The film tells the story of Nguyen Vu, the the sole survivor of his family who got executed by the empress of Vietnam. Upon discovering that his family may have been framed for crimes they did not commit, he sets out to deliver swift justice and clear his family name. Chris Wong\u2019s score entertains with heroic orchestral anthems fused with the occasional flavor of Vietnamese instrumentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>Sword of the Assassin\u00a0<\/i>was the rare opportunity to work on a historical fantasy epic which used Wuxia style martial arts sequences for its action pieces\u201d recalls Chris Wong about the project. \u201cThis film was my fifth feature film collaboration with director Victor Vu, and whereas some of our previous projects had been fairly serious, this was really the first opportunity for both of us to cut loose and have a lot of fun because of the fantasy elements. \u00a0Even though it\u2019s not my first nature, I had always thought it would be fun to write a score with big adventure themes, in the vein of so many of the great Hollywood scores of the 80s. \u00a0The film has an epic fable feel to the storytelling, involving royal bloodlines and a quest to right past wrongs. \u00a0The main musical themes carry these qualities and impart a feeling of fatalistic resolve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Composer Christopher Wong has established himself as one of the top composers in the Vietnam film industry. Christopher\u2019s interest in film music began late in college when he was selected by the music department to study privately under Jerry Goldsmith. His first major credit was\u00a0<i>Journey from the Fall<\/i>, the debut feature from director Ham Tran \u2013 the film received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, while the score earned a nomination from the International Film Music Critics Association for Best New Composer of 2007.
