After the Flood (Blair Mowat)
Original score from season 1 and 2 of the 2024-2026 crime drama series created by Mick Ford, directed by Azhur Saleem and Tom McKay, starring Sophie Rundle, Lorraine Ashbourne and Philip Glenister, produced by Quay Street Productions, released by ITV (UK) and Britbox (USA)
THE STORY: Joanna finds an unidentified man dead in a lift in a underground car park after a devastating flood, police assumes that he became trapped as the waters rose, but she is obsessed with discovering what happened to him.
THE SCORE: “Across both seasons of After the Flood, I built the score around two opposing musical forces: the warmth of a community and the corruption that threatens to unravel it. The Community Theme, heard in ‘Community Spirit’, is joyous and celebratory, with rustic instruments bringing hints of Northern English folk to the darkness of the murder investigation. Against it sits Mackie’s Theme, heard in ‘Mackie Takes Control’, where hard-edged analogue synths, guitars and pounding percussion embody chaos, greed and corruption. I played many of the guitar, bass and percussion parts myself, alongside contributions from some wonderful musicians. We used everything from a steel-strung resonator to an electro-acoustic bass ukulele, with solo strings adding intimacy and an orchestra giving the larger emotional moments their scale. As the stakes rise, the music darkens, but melody remains at its heart. This album brings both seasons together, moving through celebration, unease, anger and loss towards the bittersweet orchestral release of the finale. I hope listeners enjoy reliving the story through its music, as well as discovering details in the performances and arrangements that can slip beneath the surface on screen.” – Blair Mowat
