Original score from the 2025 drama mini-series directed by Tomas Alfredson, starring Gustav Lindh, Tevy Poe and John Erickson, Jesper Christensen and Frida Gustavsson, produced by Miso Film Sverige and released by Arte (France/Germany).

THE STORY: An acclaimed director reunites with his former lover, confronting the aftermath of their secret affair. Decades earlier, they fell in love while she was married to his best friend.

THE SCORE: “After having worked with Faithlessdirector Tomas Alfredson on a few other projects, including arranging and conducting Johan Söderqvist’s score for Let the Right One In, I was approached to write the on-screen source music for the jazz group that one of the main characters, Markus, is touring with. This music was recorded before the shooting of the series, and then Tomas asked me if I would be interested in doing the score as well. What I had written earlier actually informed the rest of the music: chamber-sized, intimate and very much in tune with the sensitive visual language. There is a lot of piano, string quartet, but also a type of music that was inspired by the German krautrock of the 70s – bands like Neu! and Can – to set the tone, as the storytelling is going back and forth between that era and present day. The deeper we get into the drama, the more naked the music becomes. I had the idea to combine modernist string writing with distorted guitar, to illustrate the painful memories that the characters have. Tomas Alfredson is incredibly well versed in music and he believes in it, understands the power it has. Sometimes he let music carry a scene completely! – Hans Ek  

THE COMPOSER: Flying freely through past and present, in search of uniting threads, arranger, composer and conductor Hans Ek weaves together countless musical expressions. This has produced several rich collaborations with artists such as Zara Larsson, Laleh, Veronica Maggio, Ane Brun, Lykke Li, Miriam Bryant, Eva Dahlgren, Stewart Copeland, Rufus Wainwright, Gregory Porter, the Metropole Orchestra, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Göteborg Opera, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and many more. In recent years, Ek’s own productions, such as E.S.T. Symphony, Bowie in Berlin, Chelsea Hotel, Kosmische Musik, Made by Björk, Studio 54-Disco Inferno, Dance Music Symphony, 30 Century Man – Scott Walker and Eno Remixed for Orchestra have been performed both in Sweden and abroad. Hans Ek has arranged and conducted music for several films, including Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winning In a Better World, and the Norwegian blockbuster Kon-Tiki. He has collaborated with director Tomas Alfredsson on the movies Let the Right One In, as well as in the series Faithless.
