THE STORY: Two gentle friends, Leonard and Hungry Paul, navigate life’s challenges as overlooked nice guys, their journeys unfolding through humorous and poignant moments exploring themes of inciting change versus acceptance.

THE SCORE: “In developing the score for Leonard & Hungry Paul I wanted to create a soundscape that reflected them as characters and the way they see the world. Fundamentally this is a quiet show that takes its time to develop, there are no moments of high drama or peril, just two misfits who learn something about themselves along the way and have a quiet but profound impact on the people around them.  The tone of the music and instrumentation reflects this, by using warm picked acoustics and soft-edged bubbly synths, light drums and percussion, and most crucially giving voice to their heart and the wonder they have for the world. The music skews more homely with Leonard and then more offbeat with Hungry Paul. There is a lot of introspection in the narrative, and the duality of two voices humming felt like an appropriate choice for a lot of the melodic material. Production-wise I wanted to keep it lo-fi and warm but timeless and, crucially, exist in the moment with them.” – Oli Julian  

THE COMPOSER: Oli Julian is an RTS award-winning and Ivor Novello-nominated composer, producer, and arranger known for his inventive, infectious and memorable scores, often using vocal melodies and unusual instrumentation. His notable projects include the theme and score for Netflix’s hit series Sex Education, as well as music for the critically acclaimed comedy drama Catastrophe (Channel 4), Coky Geidroyc’s feature How to Build a Girl, and adventure drama Renegade Nell for Disney+, starring Louisa Harland.
