UnBroken (Jonathan Snipes)
Original score from the 2023 documentary feature film directed by Beth Lane, produced by De Lamorandiere Rock Productions, released by Submarine Entertainment (USA).
THE STORY: The daughter of a Holocaust survivor uncovers the extraordinary story of her mother and six siblings’ escape from Nazi Germany.
THE SCORE: “I wanted the score for UnBroken to evoke the unreliability of memory and nostalgia for a time that maybe never existed. It’s a story of family, hope and stability that was built on a foundation of tragedy and loss. Human beings rising above an reprehensible zeitgeist and finding ways to help each other; the legacy that those simple moral actions can create. Consequently, the music should feel like echoes from the past, moving forward, closer to us, through time, starting in roots of pain and sadness, but leaving beauty and security when they arrive at the listener. I used a lot of old recording technology to achieve this. Tape machines, delays, spring reverbs, recordings of vinyl crackle, hiss, and other imperfections of the recording media of the past. Perhaps a too-obvious metaphor for the decay of memories, but sometimes it’s prudent to be obvious. We shouldn’t mince words when speaking about the horrors of the Jewish experience in 1930s Germany. Especially now. I’m very proud of this score. It’s one of the longest writing processes I’ve ever had on a film, and I hope the results speak for themselves. Beyond the contributions of all the brilliant musicians featured here, I’m eternally grateful to director Beth Lane and editor Aaron Soffin for their guidance and dramaturgical support.” – Jonathan Snipes
