Rock Bottom (Diego Navarro)

Original score from the 2026 animation feature film directed by Gabriel and Rodolfo Riva Palacio Alatriste, featuring the voices of Gabriel Iglesias, Joaquín Cosio and Silvia Navarro, produced by 3Doubles Spain and Huevocartoon Producciones, released by Videocine (Mexico).

THE STORY: A clueless caveman prince must lead a misfit crew to reclaim his tribe, outwit a power-hungry rival, and win the ultimate prehistoric showdown.

THE SCORE: “Scoring Rock Bottom has been one of the most intense, exciting, and monumental musical adventures of my career. In animated cinema – especially in a story combining runaway action, comedy, and a grand spirit of adventure – the music takes on an omnipresent narrative role. The result is nearly 85 minutes of music for full symphonic orchestra, conceived and orchestrated against the clock in just five weeks: a colossal challenge that required pouring in every single ounce of energy and inspiration. The film takes us thousands of years back to the prehistoric era to follow the journey of Gungo, the spoiled son of a tribal chief. At first, he is driven by ego and laziness, but through an odyssey packed with trials, memorable gags, and hurdles, he manages to overcome his own limitations and find his true self. Beyond the laugh-out-loud humor, the film holds a deeply touching and necessary message for today’s younger generation. To bring this world to life, we needed an immense sonic canvas. The recording took place at the legendary Smecky Music Studios in Prague, where I had the privilege of conducting the magnificent City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. At the very heart of the score beats the main theme – a piece I presented to our directors and producers Rodolfo and Gabriel Riva Palacio, Nacho Casares, and Darío Sánchez – crafted as the musical DNA of the entire work. Within it converge the epic grandeur of the caveman games, the lyricism of the friendship and love theme for Yahi, and the comedic spark of my favorite character: Ayashure, that endearing prehistoric inventor with quirky glasses whose genius called for a vibrant, agile, and spirited motif. Striving for genuine organic authenticity, I delved into an “archaeo-musicological” exploration to unearth sonic textures that actually resonated in those primordial caves. We incorporated the bullroarer (zumbadora), a rotating wooden instrument capable of summoning an ancient, primal atmosphere; and the ancestral pututo or conch shell, an early precursor to modern brass horns. Both were tracked in dedicated acoustic session  and organically blended with the symphonic textures. Alongside them are orchestral tuned percussion (marimbas and xylophones) as direct descendants of ancient stone lithophones, a massive deployment of percussive colors, and the instinctive raw energy of male voices bursting forth with visceral prehistoric chants. To all of you, dear film music fans and soundtrack collectors holding this album: thank you from the bottom of my heart for joining me on this musical journey. I sincerely hope that as you listen to these cues, you relive the magic, humor, and emotion with the same passion and devotion with which they were composed.” – Diego Navarro
