Reviews
“Dragonkeeper is an excellent score, melodic and emotional, intelligent and engaging. There is so much depth and sophistication on display here, and I just hope that it finds the audience that Arturo Cardelús’s music demands.” (Movie Music UK)
“A fantastic orchestral fantasy work that should appeal to all with the mixture of Western orchestral sensibilities and Eastern instruments expertly realized.” (Soundtrack Universe)
Dragonkeeper (Arturo Cardelús)
Original score from the 2024 fantasy adventure animation feature film directed by Jianping Li and Salvador Simó, featuring the voices of Mario Gas, Lucía Perez and Nano Castro, produced by China Film Animation, Atresmedia Cine and Movistar+, distributed by Viva Pictures and Hulu (USA), SC Films (UK) and A Contracorriente Films (Spain).
THE STORY: The fate of ancient China rests on the shoulders of one young girl, who must find the last remaining dragon egg and fulfill her destiny.
THE SCORE: “Dragonkeeper is a soundtrack that revolves around three main themes, each associated with the three most significant characters in the story: Ping, Diao, and Danzi. Ping’s theme aims to evoke a universe of light and innocence. In contrast, Diao’s theme is dark and twisted, while with Danzi, we sought to capture maturity and serenity. We did extensive research into Chinese instruments, collaborating with Jiale Yi and Karen Han, two prominent Chinese artists with extensive experience in this type of ensemble. Our idea was to blend the classic sound of film scores with the richness of Chinese instruments. Jiale Yi contributed her virtuosity on the Yangqin, while Karen Han brought her mastery of the Erhu. Karen is a Hollywood legend who has recorded soundtracks such as John Williams’ Memoirs of a Geisha and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s The Last Emperor. Another crucial element in the soundtrack was Veronika Vitazkova, an expert in Chinese flutes and a wonderful musician, who recorded the Qudi solos in her Vienna studio.” – Arturo Cardelús
THE COMPOSER: Arturo Cardelús is a Spanish-American composer based in Los Angeles, CA. His score for Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles was called “score of the year” by The Wrap, was nominated for the Goya Award (Spanish Academy Awards) and the IFMCA Award. Cardelús has also scored the internet sensation In a Heartbeat, the Netflix original miniseries Call Me Francis, the Billy Zane drama Centurion: The Dancing Stallion, and Netflix’s Black Beach, directed by Oscar nominee Esteban Crespo. Cardelús’ recent projects include Disney’s Descendants, Dragonkeeper, and Frida Kahlo Immersive Exhibition. Dragonkeeper is Cardelús’ third collaboration with MovieScore Media.
