“Stephen Rennicks’ sparkling score have done wonders cultivating the sensual tone and texture.” (The Wrap)

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (Stephen Rennicks)

Original score from the 2022 drama comedy feature film directed by Sophie Hyde, starring Emma Thompson, Daryl McCormack and Isabella Laughland, produced by Genesius Pictures, Align, Cornerstone Films and Searchlight Pictures, released by Searchlight Pictures and Hulu (USA), Lionsgate (UK) and Wild Bunch (Germany/France).

THE STORY: Nancy Stokes, a 55-year-old widow, is yearning for some adventure, human connection, and some sex–some good sex.

THE SCORE: The original score for Good Luck to You, Leo Grande has a dreamy quality, where a simple perpetuum mobile motif for piano provides motion forward. Other sections of the score feature restrained, shimmering electronic textures (eg. the title track, “Leo Grande”) and beautiful piano solos. Like many of Stephen Rennicks’ previous scores, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is also somewhat quirky, a perfect accompaniment to the unusual storyline of the film.

THE COMPOSER: Irish composer Stephen Rennicks is best-known for his collaborations with director Lenny Abrahamson, their collaborations include Garage (2007) and What Richard Did (2012) – both of which won the IFTA for best film – the musically-driven Frank (2014), starring Michael Fassbender, Domnhall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhaal as well as Room (2015), for which Rennicks was nominated for the Canadian Screen Award for Best Score and won for Best Original Music at the Irish Film & Television Awards. In the past two years, Rennicks has been nominated at the awards for three of his scores: The Little Stranger (2020), Rosie (2021) and Normal People (2021). Most recently he was the composer of the hit Hulu series Conversations with FriendsAs a musically driven feature, it has given Rennicks the opportunity to work both as composer and musical director. His television work includes Pure Mule, Bittersweet, and No Laughing Matter. He’s also composed the music for Man About Dog directed by Paddy Breathnach, Stephen Bradley’s Boy Eats Girl and John Butler’s 2013 hit film The Bachelor Weekend.
