THE SCORE: “Composing the score for Sherwood was all about capturing the intricate and often fractured relationships within the community. The music needed to reflect both the town’s shared history and the unresolved tensions that continue to influence its people. The series is deeply rooted in the emotional and social scars left by past events, and the score had to embody this sense of connection and conflict. At the core of the score is the main theme, which is built around low, swelling brass chords and intertwining string patterns, known as ostinatos. The brass serves as a sonic anchor, representing the weight of the town’s troubled past. It gives the music a sense of heaviness and gravity, symbolizing how the history of the town lingers over its present. The intertwining string ostinatos, on the other hand, represent the ongoing tensions and unresolved conflicts that flow through the community. These repeating patterns reinforce the idea that, despite the fractures and divisions, everything and everyone in this story remains interconnected. THE COMPOSER: Lorne Balfe is a Grammy Award winning, Emmy and BAFTA nominated film composer from Inverness, Scotland. His filmography boasts an incredible breadth of titles, ranging from major studio to independent films, tentpole video game franchises, beloved animations films, critically acclaimed television series, and documentary features. Lorne’s recent film and television credits include the upcoming The Cut, Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Steven Spielberg’s Life on Our Planet, DC Studios’ Black Adam, Luther: The Fallen Sun for Netflix, Ticket To Paradise starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, Top Gun: Maverick as score producer, Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, the Amazon original The Wheel of Time, and three series of the television adaptations of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials for BBC One/HBO.
