“Supporting the tight script and shining performances is a moody score by two-time Emmy nominated Joseph Conlan. Ranging from high tension, to sobering lows, his score is present only when required as a reinforcement of the action on-screen… A volatile yet delicate atmosphere is birthed for the whole picture.” (UK Film Review)
Be Good or Be Gone (Joseph Conlan)
The Irish mob dramedy Be Good or Be Gone features a quirky but also very emotionally charged score by composer Joseph Conlan (Sanctuary). Directed by Cathal Nally, the film tells the story of two petty criminal cousins Ste (Les Martin) and Weed (Declan Mills) who receive a temporary release from prison as we follow their misfortunes over the next four days. Be Good or Be Gone film won the Garden State Film Festival in the category of Best International Feature and the took home the best film award at the Underground Cinema Film Festival Awards. The score album release co-incides with the US film release on April 13.
“Scores for movies like this are a lot of fun for me to write,” says composer Joseph Conlan. “While the story has a comedic tone to it, it is dead serious through most of it, with very dark characters threatening the well being of our lovable lead characters. And then there are the warm, romantic parts of the story that get you invested in our two guys and their relationships. So, for Be Good or Be Gone, I got to write light hearted, groove oriented material (“Mr. Darius and His Histrionics”, “Don’t be Ages”) that could fold into some very dark, suspense/thriller, atmospheric moods (“Braler Gets Some Bad News”, “Ste Turns the Table”). And then again, there were the warmer, emotional moments with full, lush orchestrations (“Last Chance”, “Ring in a Box”).”
Among the notable film directors with whom Conlan has collaborated are Tobe Hooper (Toolbox Murders), John Badham (Obsessed), Gregg Champion (The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn) and Thomas Bezucha (Big Eden). His most significant television series are NCIS, Simon & Simon, Tour of Duty and The Equalizer while his work on television films includes titles like the Emmy-nominated scores for Miracle Run (Mary-Louise Parker, Zack Efron) and Mortal Sins (Christopher Reeve). The composer’s awards include Best Score for No Justice at the Underground Film Festival and Best Song for Finding Home at the Rome International Film Festival. His scores for Spiders 3D, The Callback Queen and Sanctuary have been released by MovieScore Media.
