Carriage Return (Elena Maro)

Original score from the 2024 drama short directed by Ferguson Sauvé-Rogan, starring Jeremy Parr and Carlos Sanchez, produced by Daniel Sauvé-Rogan and Lexi Giovagnoli.

THE STORY: Half-drunk and hardly working, playwright Lane Williams is in desperate need of inspiration to finish his latest script when a knock at the door escalates to ferocious pounding. His old writing partner, Charlie Marlow, has sought him out with violent accusations of plagiarism.

THE SCORE: “When director Ferguson Sauvé-Rogan called me for Carriage Return, a black and white movie set in New York in the 50s and I heard jazz, I was thrilled. The film won me over right away, with its surreal plot, full of unforeseen twists and turns. Ferguson and his brother Daniel – published author and, in this case, screenwriter, co-producer and, as it turned out later, refined bass player! – were looking for a score that, just like the film: ‘the moment you think you have it figured out, you realize you haven’t’. This gave me the opportunity to transition from jazz to unexplored avant-garde territories, through the invaluable help of some amazing LA sessions musicians. The haunting percussion by Brian Kilgore and the impactful jazz big band – Chris Tedesco on trumpets, Glen Berger on saxes, Jim McMillen on trombones – talk to each other in many unexpected ways, just like the two characters on screen, while the choice of unusual instruments, the unconventional techniques for the woodwinds, the unorthodox use of sound processing blend captivatingly into the score, expertly mixed by Damon Tedesco. – Elena Maro
