Eyríki (Kathryn MacLennan / Mike MacLennan)

Original score from the 2026 documentary feature film directed by Nikolai Galitzine, produced by Northern Wave Productions and The Heavy Lifting Company.

THE STORY: When their church burns down in a storm, its loss highlights the struggle of a tiny arctic community facing climate and societal change.

THE SCORE: Eyríki is a love letter to Grímsey, a beautiful, remote island off the coast of Iceland with a dwindling population of around 25 people. When director Nikolai Galitzine first showed us the film, it was immediately clear that the score needed to feel intimate and understated. The film centres on the destruction and rebuilding of Grímsey’s church, so we created a palette of pads and textures derived from church bells, weaving them throughout the score. These are blended with strings—performed by violinist John Mills of the Tippett Quartet—and subtle synths to create a sound world that feels both fragile and hopeful. It was important that the music reflected the emotional landscape of this remote community as they navigate depopulation, climate change, and an uncertain future, while always leaving space for their voices to be heard and their stories to take centre stage.” Kathryn MacLennan & Mike MacLennan

They are currently scoring a number of natural history projects. Alongside their collaborative work, both have established individual careers. Kathryn’s music can be heard on an array of productions for networks such as BBC, ITV, CBS, ESPN, Sky Sports and PBS.
