“Pierre-Henri Wicomb keeps the score restrained rather than telling the audience how to feel at every turn, which leaves real room for silence, breathing, and unfamiliar tones to carry weight on their own. That restraint turns out to be one of the smartest choices in the whole film. A more conventional score would spell out every emotional beat. This one trusts the audience to sit with uncertainty instead.” (Hello Top Lists)

Orion (Pierre-Henri Wicomb)

Original score from the 2025 sci-fi feature film directed by Jaco Bouwer, starring Debby Ryan, Andrew McCarthy and Drew Van Acker, produced by East of Infinity and released by Blue Harbor Entertainment (USA).

THE STORY: A sole survivor astronaut returns from a disastrous mission with no memory of what killed his crew. Working with a interrogator, he races to recover the truth before a deadly threat he unknowingly brought back reaches Earth.

THE SCORE: “Orion was a unique project to work on because of its science-fiction setting, combined with a thought-provoking, mystery-driven narrative that relies on the concentrated interaction and dialogue between two characters. Alongside a tone that deliberately obscures the story’s underlying deception, I wrote music that underscored the immediate reality of the two main actors—one that, in a sense, was not looking ahead and wasn’t yet aware of what was happening beneath the surface. I combined an undemanding electronic score with minimal acoustic elements, highlighting the intimate character dynamics between the two main actors and creating an environment in which the soundtrack could develop, ‘sound’, and platform the unfolding perceptions toward a budding trust between the two main characters. I wanted the sound world to feel transparent, especially alongside the visceral dialogue, which led to a slow paced, lyrical, ‘melody-strong’ approach to the score. The sound/language created for the alien communication device was strongly influenced by the actor’s interaction with this machine. Because of his use of more fluid, flowing gestures when operating the’talking’ machine, I decided to ‘simulate’ this action through implementing tones that were not static, but instead moved across pitches, and tone colours.” – Pierre-Henri Wicomb
