Original score from the 2023 adventure short directed by Gedaly Guberek and Reuben Guberek, starring Beth May, Tim Storms and Ajala Bandele, produced by Razee.

THE STORY: Once upon a time, in a far off made-up kingdom known as Italy, an itinerant swordsman named Fiore quests across the countryside in search royal employment, followed by his trusty apprentice Niccolo, a girl disguised as a boy.

THE SCORE: “When I first met Gedaly and Reuben Guberek, the directors and producers of the film, we immediately bonded over our shared love of classic adventure films (Robin Hood, The Legend of Zorro, The Princess Bride). I couldn’t believe how they were able to capture the heart, comedy and scale of films like that in a short film! It inspired me to try to capture that feeling musically and pack a feature’s worth of themes in a short film, a daunting task especially when temped with Elmer Bernstein and Korngold! I wrote three themes that made it into the film, and based the score around that. Full credit to the filmmakers for entertaining my crazy idea that since this film harkens back to classic adventure films, it must be recorded with live orchestra! It was a fun challenge figuring out how to make that work logistically, whilst still feeling like an homage to 40’s/50’s film scores with a modern twist. We all inspired each other throughout the process, and the end result is that everyone on the team – from Brian Taylor the score mixer and his team, Joe Carrillo (orchestrator), Budapest Scoring Orchestra – went all out to create a score we hope will remind people of the films they grew up with.

THE COMPOSER: Nikhil Koparkar is an award-winning composer and performing artist who creates scores and songs for film, television and gaming.  In 2023, he wrote the official main theme for Riot Games’ League Of Legends – Lunar New Year, which is featured in all their videos, in-game, as well as the foundation for other composers’ music. He currently works as an additional composer for Lorne Balfe at 14th Street Music, writing and arranging music on TV shows like the acclaimed Amazon Studios’ The Wheel of Time, the HBO fantasy series, His Dark Materials, the BBC drama, Sherwood and the Hulu docu-series, Victoria’s Secret: Angels & Demons. In addition to scoring, Nikhil works with Joy Music House on score production, most notably on the Oscar-Nominated score to A24’s Minari and Amazon’sHomecoming Season 2 for Emile Mosseri. His official theme song for the Cusco Futbol Club (a Peruvian national soccer team) is currently played at stadium games and press events in Peru. His speciality of combining instruments from different cultures with a modern western cinematic palette led to his being invited to give a Talks at Google on the subject in 2019.
