“The music is haunting as well as effective, the composer treating us to wonderfully rich and thematic compositions… This is a score that has to it an emotive and stylish musical persona, an excellent work that you should be listening to right now.”Movie Music International

The Cars We Drove into Capitalism (Dalibor Grubacevic)

Original score from the 2021 documentary feature film directed by Georgi Bogdanov and Boris Missirkov, produced by Agitprop, Danish Documentary Production, Hulahop and Saxonia Entertainment, released by Agitprop.

THE STORY: A cinematic, character-driven insight to what it meant to produce and to own a car in communist times: the Socialist propaganda dreams and the hard reality of living that dream. The freedom that these slow and clumsy vehicles were giving to their owners; the cars as an instrument in the Cold War battle; legends and homemade tune-ups as an attempt to stand at least a little bit off the crowd

THE SCORE: The Cars We Drove into Capitalism is a documentary in which I collaborated for the first time with the Bulgarian directors Boris Missirkov and Georgi Bogdanov. The approach to scoring the film was different than anything I did before. Because the film itself is about a collection of characters from all over Europe and their stories about life during the 60s and 70s of the last century,  so the music had to be stylistically diverse. From orchestral themes to surf and electronic music. However, I think that we all managed to create a nice film with the music that completes the picture in each segment.” – Dalibor Grubacevic

THE COMPOSER: Dalibor Grubačević is an award-winning Croatian composer of film & concert music. He has received several major professional awards in his country and abroad. He is also a multifaceted artist of eclectic musical interests, whose work is best described by the contradictory label of an “unclassical classicist.” In his composition, he uses classical orchestration combined with electronic sounds and instrumentation. He is a full member of the Croatian Composers’ Society (HDS) and Croatian Freelance Artists’ Association (HZSU).
Beside film scores, Grubacevic is interested in pop, rock, and ethno music as much as in classical writing. His concert pieces has been performed around the world, from Canada, the United States, Japan, England, Italy, Israel etc. Soundtrack composition, which has become his current stock in trade, begun with Grubacevic’s well-received score for the 2006  Croatian children’s feature The Ghost in the Swamp (2006), directed by Branko Istvancic.
Also worth noting is his score for the 2021 sports historical drama “The Match” with Armand Assante and Franco Nero, and the 2022 drama “The Conversation” with Caspar Phillipson and Dylan Turner.
