MovieScore Media’s latest release of a BBC miniseries is Anne Nikitin’s music from Mrs. Wilson, starring Ruth Wilson, Iain Glenn, Keely Hawes, Anupam Kher and Fiona Shaw. Developed by Anna Symon and directed by Richard Laxton, the 3-part drama is set in 1940s and 1960s London and 1930s India and follows Alison Wilson, who thinks she is happily married until her husband dies and a woman turns up on the doorstep claiming that she is the real Mrs. Wilson. The series was nominated for 3 BAFTAs while Anne Nikitin’s score was nominated at the Music+Sound Awards in the category of television scores.
Nikitin’s music for the series is a lovely throwback to classic Cold War and espionage series with rich, dark strings establishing the intercontinental mysteries. While the music starts off with more romantic material for Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, the husband’s death brings a turning point in the story as the emergence of a competing wife creates a claustrophobic atmosphere through moody and tense orchestral cues. But in the middle of great despair comes great happiness as well, including the reliogiously inspired organ music of “Rosary” or the emotional highlight “Childbirth” just to name a few examples.
Anne Nikitin is a Canadian composer based in the UK. Her debut into film scoring came when she wrote music for the BAFTA-winning film The Imposter for director Bart Layton, which she followed up with the director’s latest heist movie, American Animals. Her other recent credits include Captive, a thrilling 8-part Netflix true crime series and This Beautiful Fantastic, a modern day fairytale which was nominated for a Music+Sound Award for Best Original Composition in a Feature Film, and a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Independent Film Score. Her scores for Calibre and The Pale Horse have been released by MovieScore Media and she recently score the Netflix series Fate: The Winx Saga.
