Detective Kien: The Headless Horror (Christopher Wong, Ian Rees and Garrett Crosby)
Original score from the 2025 horror feature film directed by Victor Vu, starring Quoc Huy, Tran Quoc Anh and Dinh Ngoc Diep, produced by Galaxy Studio and released by 3388 Films (USA).
THE STORY: Detective Kien investigates a headless body found in a rural Vietnamese village during the Nguyen Dynasty. As supernatural elements emerge, he faces chilling twists in this 19th-century mystery.
THE SCORE: “Victor Vu and I have done a lot of suspense movies together, but one thing that makes this score unique from our previous efforts is the prominent use of the Vietnamese 2-stringed fiddle, the Dan Co. We came upon this idea organically, while working on the earliest teaser trailer – Victor knew that he wanted a string solo in a certain moment, but nothing I was doing on the cello was working for him. On a whim, I decided to try the Dan Co and he liked it so much that we started looking for places to put it in the actual film. It ended up musically representing a lot of the supernatural moments in the film and was a lot of fun to incorporate.” – Christopher Wong
THE COMPOSER: Composer Christopher Wong has established himself as the go-to composer for the rising generation of Asian American directors. His first major credit was Journey from the Fall, the debut feature from director Ham Tran – the film received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, while the score earned a nomination from the International Film Music Critics Association for Best New Composer of 2007. MovieScore Media has released Christopher’s scores for The Rebel, the romantic comedy How to Fight in Six Inch Heels and his last few collaborations with Victor Vu, including Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass, Loi Bao, The Immortal, Mat Biec, The Royal Bride, Camellia Sisters and The Guardian last year and the sci-fi Maika last year.
