“If trauma has a rhythm, Pieter de Graaf may very well have created it.” (The Independent Critic)
“Grenzfurthner crafts a taut atmosphere with Pieter de Graaf’s haunting score, which enhances the dread-laden ambiance from the first note.” (Knotfest)
Solvent (Pieter de Graaf)
Original score from the 2024 horror feature film directed by Johannes Grenzfurthner, starring Jon Gries, Sky Elobar and Galen Howard, produced by Monochrom Propulsion Systems and released by Film Movement (USA).
THE STORY: While hunting Nazi papers in Austria, researchers find a dark secret beneath a farmhouse. As expat Gunner Holbrook pursues the mystery, his grip on reality slips. He battles an evil force, racing to save himself.
THE SCORE: “This project was especially meaningful to me because it was the first time I composed music for a feature film. Although I had previously worked on documentaries and commercials, this was a completely new experience. I met the director, Johannes Grenzfurthner, in Austria, and we immediately connected on a creative level. Not long after meeting, he asked me to compose the score, and there was never any real doubt about collaborating. What made the process unique was the artistic freedom he gave me. Aside from requesting a continuous dark undertone throughout the film and a Hebrew version of ‘Die Gedanken sind frei’ for the ending, he allowed me to interpret the rest entirely in my own way. I simply watched the film, felt inspired, and composed intuitively. The collaboration was smooth and natural, with only minor adjustments along the way. The soundtrack differs from my usual piano-based work. Instead, I experimented with sounds, including my voice, toy instruments, and unconventional effects like blowing into wine bottles, combined with orchestral elements. I’m very proud of the authentic result and hope listeners will enjoy the album“ – Pieter de Graaf
THE COMPOSER: Dutch pianist, composer and producer Pieter de Graaf is one of the Netherlands’ most distinctive contemporary instrumental artists. Blending neo-classical, jazz and electronic elements, his music transcends genre boundaries while remaining deeply emotional and cinematic. Trained as a jazz pianist at the conservatory, Pieter developed a strong foundation in improvisation and experimentation. His unconventional approach to the piano — using rubber mallets, chopsticks, tape and cloths on the strings — transforms the instrument into a complete sonic universe. Combined with analogue synthesizers, subtle electronics and unexpected sound sources, his compositions move seamlessly between intimacy and intensity. Over the years, Pieter has performed internationally, from major festivals such as Mysteryland and Pinkpop to prestigious concert halls including Het Concertgebouw. He has collaborated with artists such as Kyteman and Wouter Hamel, performed with orchestras and choirs, and created immersive audiovisual shows — including a planetarium performance at DOT Groningen. His solo career gained rapid momentum with the release of his first tracks, attracting a large international audience and accumulating tens of millions of streams on platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. In 2020, he received the prestigious Edison Award in the ‘Neo-Classical’ category. Pieter continues to explore the full emotional spectrum — from romantic piano minimalism to powerful electronic soundscapes. Uncompromising in his artistic vision, Pieter de Graaf creates music that is immersive, innovative and unmistakably his own.
