THE STORY: 21-year-old Cioma Schönhaus won’t let anyone take away his zest for life, especially not the Nazis. Using the identity of a marine officer he created for himself, he throws himself into the city’s nightlife and even finds a fragile hope for love during the darkest moments of the war. Throughout the day he forges IDs with just a brush.

THE SCORE: “Writing for The Forger was both a pleasure and a whirlwind of inspiration and determination. I was connected to the project by the producer of the film and went on to have initial meetings with the film’s director, Maggie Peren. From the beginning I felt passionate about scoring the film and began quickly and naturally to compose. I created themes and waltzes that combined Jewish folklore elements with additional vibrant and youthful fusions of the different styles of jazz, classical and folk. To gain the right musical textures I used Berlin based musicians for live recordings of instruments such as trumpet, clarinet, accordion, viola, drums and upright bass.” – Mario Grigorov

THE COMPOSER: Mario Grigorov is a Bulgarian-born film composer living in the United States. Some of his most recognisable film work comes from his long-standing collaboration with Academy Award-winning director Lee Daniels, scoring Shadowboxer, Tennessee, the Academy Award-winning Precious, and The Paperboy (starring Nicole Kidman). In 2014 Mario met with Harry Potter director David Yates, and went on to co-wrote an original song with J.K. Rowling for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. His list of works include the eerie yet gorgeous score to Lifetime’s Original Movie series cult classic, Flowers in the Attic, starring Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn and the war documentary Taxi to the Darkside by Alex Gibney, which won a 2008 Academy Award for Best Documentary.
