“Strings, flutes and harps beautifully evoke the Scottish Isles; a lush, lilting sound that’s as romantic as the heather on the highlands.” (Film Music Institute)
The Rocket Post (Nigel Clarke and Michael Csányi-Wills)
Original score from the 2004 drama feature film directed by Stephen Whittaker, starring Kevin McKidd, Eddie Marsan and Ulrich Thomsen, produced by Ultimate Pictures and released by Lionsgate (UK) and Hannover House (USA).
THE STORY: A German rocket scientist arrives on a small Scottish island in the mid 1930s. He’s there to run tests on a new type of rocket that is to be used for mail delivery between the island and the mainland. Initially he’s met with skepticism, but slowly the islanders come to like and trust him. One of the young women falls in love with him, but with WWII around the corner life gets complicated.
THE SCORE: The music for The Rocket Post is a classic example of melodic, theme-driven orchestral film music at its best. Clarke and Csányi-Wills build their score around several themes, including a memorable main theme which has a folk music-like simplicity and beauty which works both for intimate solos and full-blown orchestral statements. There are also several dramatic tracks in the score, and darker thematic material as well. Performed with great passion by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Rocket Post is a score that deserves a large audience outside the film it was composed for
THE COMPOSER: Composer Michael Csányi-Wills is a veteran of film music; between 1997 and 2012 he collaborated with Nigel Clarke on several scores, including Warner Brothers’ The Little Vampire, The Little Polar Bear and The Thief Lord. His solo credits include the documentary The King of Nerac, the Paavo Järvi documentary Maestro as well as the short film A Love Story in Milk for which he won the Best Score Award at the Movie Maverick Awards. Besides his career in film scoring, Michael was appointed composer in residence of the Welsh Sinfonia in 2013 and still regularly performs as a pianist.
