“Simon Porter’s score is a stand-out, adding intrigue and a sense of seriousness and earnest in the midst of the silliness.” (Filmhounds)
“Enjoyable and fun.” (Movie Music International)
Time Travel Is Dangerous (Simon Porter)
Original score from the 2024 sci-fi comedy feature film directed by Chris Reading, featuring Laura Aikman, Stephen Fry and Sophie Thompson, produced by Shakespeare Sisters and Candr Pictures, released by Jade Films (UK).
THE STORY: Best friends Ruth and Megan run a vintage shop in Muswell Hill. Stumbling across a time machine, they embark on trips to the past to stock their shop with no idea of the irreparable damage they’re causing to the fabric of the universe.
THE SCORE: “Time Travel Is Dangerous has been a part of my life since 2017, when director Chris Reading and I made a five minute film, The Unreason, for the Sci-Fi London 48 Hour Challenge – the original music from which is included in this soundtrack. Many years and various iterations later, we arrived at the feature. Given its genre-mashup nature, writing the music for this film was really a job of two halves, scoring the expository mockumentary first half as though it were a regular TV doc – essentially a ‘library music’ job, fairly hands-off in terms of writing to any particular beats or moments. And writing the music for a film about time travel is I think the film composer’s dream brief in many ways – it affords you the opportunity to be something of a chameleon and convey all manner of music genres, as Ruth and Megan travel through the various eras. In this case that includes medieval, the American civil war, the American Frontier, 70s funk, 80s synthwave/wailing guitars, 90s new jack swing, through to the present day, which is where the film catches up with the protagonists in the present and becomes more of traditional orchestral film-scoring job, with some retro 80s seasoning here and there.” – Simon Porter
THE COMPOSER: Simon Porter’s work includes the Emmy-nominated natural history series Evolution Earth (PBS/Sky) for Passion Pictures, the Royal Television Society award-winning Drowning in Plastic (BBC) for RAW, and My Life: Taking My Shot (CBBC) for Format Factory. In feature films, Simon has composed for projects ranging from the sci-fi comedy Time Travel Is Dangerous, starring Johnny Vegas, Sophie Thompson, and Stephen Fry, to the psychological horror Inmate Zero and the contemporary Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado. His short film work includes Dope Fiend (Film4), the DIFF-nominated thriller 7 to 10, and Alien: Containment, created as part of the 40th-anniversary celebrations of Alien in collaboration with 20th Century Fox.
