THE STORY: Exploring the achievements of Eileen Collins, the first woman to pilot and command a spacecraft, paving the way for the next generation of female space explorers.

THE SCORE: “The score for Spacewoman is one of the most ambitious and creatively satisfying scores of my career. The wonderful film directed by Hannah Berryman is part an inspiring tale of a female pilot (Eileen Collins) overcoming barriers and part space thriller so the challenge was how to wrap these different elements into a cohesive score. Early on during my conversations with Hannah and editor James Gold we agreed on an orchestral palette with a healthy dose of piano for the more intimate moments.  The recurring theme of First Woman Astronauts was one of the main pieces of the puzzle as were some of the more tense cues that dealt with the launches like First Launch and Atlantis Landing. The score also covers a lot of Eileen Collins’ personal life on tracks like Home Life and Elmira. It is a dream for any composer to write music for Space related subjects both for the scope the subject allows in music and orchestration but also for the awe inspiring idea of the human race expanding its reach into the stars and I couldn’t have asked for a better collaborator and subject.” – Marcelo Zarvos

THE COMPOSER: The subtle nuances of composer Marcelo Zarvos’ style are exemplified in his recent scores for Netflix’s critically acclaimed The Diplomat, May December directed by Todd Haynes, and Amazon’s Cassandro. Zarvos began his music studies at CalArts. At this institution, he expanded his knowledge of classical piano studies with jazz and world music. In addition to music, Cal Arts was an opportunity for Zarvos to grow his artistic background with non-music departments including dance, art history, and film. He burst onto the film landscape in the early 2000s with his score for Kissing Jessica Stein and film adaptation of the John Irving novel, The Door in the Floor. Zarvos’ credits include The Good Shepherd, The Words, Brooklyn’s Finest, The Face of Love, Reaching for the Moon, Sin Nombre, Hollywoodland, Adult Beginners, The Humbling, Little Accidents, American Ultra and Enough Said. His recent projects include A24’s The Front Room directed by Max and Sam Eggers, director Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer 3 starring Denzel Washington, Colombia Pictures’ Big George Foreman, and Eva Longoria’s directorial debut Flamin’ Hot.
