Original score from the documentary A Cops and Robbers Story, directed by Ilinca Calugareanu and distributed by Greenwich Entertainment. It premiered at DOC NYC in November 2020 and is getting a limited theatrical release on 14 January 2022.

THE STORY: A New York City police officer’s career is threatened by revelations about his former life as a gang member.

THE SCORE: “Whereas Corey Pegues, the main character, is an avid fan of the East Coast hip-hop scene, we have chosen in the original score to highlight the inner narrative of his story, to be contrasting and intimate. In this respect, the score moves inwards rather than outwards. The story of Corey, a former Deputy Inspector at the NYPD with a past in The Supreme Team (a notorious drug gang) radiates a constant tension, which we have given plenty of room for by working sparingly in the music. No big movements, no strong synths or dark sounds, but rather a subtle depth, which extends to harmony, melody and instrumentation. The performance was done by pianist Mirek Coutigny and string ensemble Echo Collective, known for their collaboration with Jóhann Jóhannsson, among others.” – Ruben De Gheselle

THE COMPOSER: The 29-year-old film composer Ruben de Gheselle, known for his intimate, hypnotic and sometimes dark scores, is active on various international productions including some recent titles such as the Cannes nominated and Costa Rican entry for the Academy Awards – Clara Sola (2021), which won the Georges Delerue Award for Best Music’ at Film Fest Gent, the Tiong Bahru Social Club (2020), nominated for the Golden Horses Awards and nominated in the Busan International Film Festival (2020) or the Canneseries winning Lockdown (2020). Ruben also worked on several internationally acclaimed short films including The Passerby (2020), Beast! (2016), Norman (2014) and Elena (2021). Furthermore, many of these films and series aired on television networks including VRT, ARTE and RTBF. Clara Sola, which is is leading the Swedish film awards with 9 nominations is slated to be released by MovieScore Media.
