The Reunion (Nicolas Repetto)

Original score from the 2022 drama The Reunion, directed by Phil Harding, starring Dave Rosenberg, Austin Pendleton and Jim Norton, produced by Team Reunion and distributed by Gravitas Ventures (USA).

THE STORY: Former actor Ricky Reilly is on a spiritual journey in Union Square Park, Manhattan with his Buddhist mentor, Danny. The high of his newfound spirituality is shattered when Ricky sees Travis, his childhood nemesis who put him in the hospital after a fight over a girl.

THE SCORE: The Reunion is a love letter to New York while exploring the trauma and effects of bullying. I decided to use the feel, energy, and vibe of the various characters, themes of opposing forces and rebirth, and the city of New York itself to help mold the themes and shape the score. Ricky’s failure theme begins with a dissonant piano motif which represents his failure as an actor and loss of his acting career; Ricky’s newfound spirituality which stems from Danny, his spiritual mentor, is represented by a serene flute solo, Tibetan throat singers, a calm orchestral/choral setting, chanting and drum circle percussion; Andy’s influence on Ricky is more robust and felt through strong orchestral themes using a full orchestra; Natalie’s Theme (or the ‘Romance Theme’) is first heard on the piano then expands to a larger orchestral setting and transforms once again to a more intimate indie vibe with the use of synths, detuned pianos, and voices. Lastly, I researched and found field recordings of howling wolves and manipulated the audio to create a particular eerie feel combined with synth and orchestral elements to represent Travis and the trauma he has imposed on Ricky.” – Nicolas Repetto
