“A Bernard Herrmann-esque score (by Sharon Farber) pulses conspiratorially throughout the documentary, giving the sense that Menkes’s narration is revealing secret and sinister facts about the way cinema caters to male fantasy.” (The New York Times)
Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power (Sharon Farber)
Original score from the 2022 documentary feature film directed by Nina Menkes, produced by Menkesfilm and EOS World Fund, released by Kino Lorber (USA).
THE STORY: Investigates the politics of cinematic shot design, and how this meta-level of filmmaking intersects with the twin epidemics of sexual abuse/assault and employment discrimination against women, with over 175 movie clips from 1896 – 2020.
THE SCORE: Music that evokes mystery, old Hollywood and the dark subject matter that we are discussing’ was what Award winning director Nina Menkes was looking for. It was clear from the beginning that the music would be orchestral, recorded live, with references to the great Bernard Herrmann. That allowed me to explore the different colors of the orchestra and power of the orchestral families. Harp, vibraphone and celeste were chosen in order to create a mysterious and haunting sound, but as the story unfolded and the drama became darker, so did the music. I used low clustered brass and woodwinds along with low strings, to bring about the looming feeling of the darker parts of the film. Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power delivers a critical and urgent message, and I truly believe it can make a difference in the film industry.” – Sharon Farber
