Original score from the 2024 horror feature film directed by Joanne Mitchell, starring Rebecca Calder, James Fleet and Jelena Moore, produced by Catalyst Studios and Mitchell-Brunt Films, released by Miracle Comms (UK).

THE STORY: Sybil works at an undertakers. It’s a lonely job, with few perks. So she takes solace where she can.

THE SCORE: “Just like the film itself, the score for Broken Bird is a litany of curious combinations; quirky and treacherous, dark humour against a backdrop of serious trauma. It is melodic, but also full of musical sound design and twisting pitches. This creates for a gripping and atmospheric telling of a lead character who always remains somewhat of a mystery. The score embraces a mixture of full string ensemble and solo strings, alongside synths and processed percussion to help represent the multiple character traits of Sybil, our ‘Broken Bird’. We were careful to never go too dark nor too funny/quirky with the score; it was vital that we supported both these sides of Sybil without allowing one to overwhelm or dominate the other. At times small, intimate and led by solo strings, the score supports the depth of the trauma, loss and grief through melody. But, like Sybil, the score also teeters precariously, constantly on the edge of complete madness before giving in in full melodic force to the warped fantasy of the film’s final scenes.” – Emily Rice

THE COMPOSER: Emily Rice is an LA-based, British-born composer for film and TV, known for her dark, post-classical score to the Netflix series The I-Land and for creating an introspective, bluesy-cello based score for Miss Juneteenth with a soundtrack released by Lakeshore Records. Emily’s other recent projects include the Netflix action-adventure anime film Sol Levante and documentaries For the Love of Rutland, Altona and Amazon’s For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign. Emily has contributed music and/or orchestration to major Hollywood productions such as Phoenix Rising, Tomb Raider, Alita: Battle Angel and The Mummy. Her debut instrumental album “Maybe It’s Because I’m a Londoner” was released in 2021 and is available on streaming platforms worldwide.
