Bugarach (Cyrille Aufort)
Original score from the 2024 sci-fi drama series directed by Fabien Montagner, starring Jeremy Banster, Linda Hardy and Marily Lima, produced by Cantina Studio and released by france.tv (France).
THE STORY: In a small town in the south of France, Émilie, a student with an unpredictable character, decides to investigate the suspicious death of her father, following the crash of his helicopter. With the help of her three friends, she goes to explore Mount Bugarach where the accident took place and discovers a portal opening onto parallel worlds.
THE SCORE: “We had a lot of intense discussions with Fabien (the director) about the musical color, about the aesthetic of the series. Through the lives of three young girls, the story of Bugarach highlights how our decisions shape our lives and affect our destinies. I started working early in the process, a few months before the shooting. I sent Fabien different musical proposals but unfortunately we realized that none of these were in the right mood when we tried them out on the first cut. That happens sometimes. So I started from scratch looking for new ideas. The music needed to have a thriller feel, an emotional touch but most of all, it had to be a sci-fi score. We opted for an electronic soundtrack and I used two different themes that develop throughout the series. It was a new and an enriching experience for me, working in such a way with only electronic devices.” – Cyrille Aufort
THE COMPOSER: Cyrille Aufort started composing music for the theatre, short films and animation films before working extensively in the cinema. While working as an orchestrator for Alexandre Desplat, Aufort’s first major composing credit was Vincenzo Natali’s DNA-based sci-fi horror Splice, starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. In 2012, Aufort and Gabriel Yared co-composed the score for A Royal Affair, the historical drama starring Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen. His more recent credits include Yann Gozlan’s A Perfect Man, Avi Nesher’s Past Life as well as the new Arctic-themed documentaries of Luc Jacquet: The Ice and the Sky and March of the Penguins 2: The Next Step, which won the Award for Best Original Music Emmy in the Mini Series, Film or Special category and a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Documentary Music. Cyrille Aufort is a featured MovieScore Media artist who has released several of his scores on the label, including the documentary Nepal: Beyond the Clouds, television movie La maladroite and the historical series Et la montagne fleurira.
