Original score from the 2022 science fiction feature film directed by Ham Tran, starring Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Elyse Dinh and Tom Dang, produced by FTP Play and released by Well Go (USA).
THE STORY: After a meteor falls to earth, 8-year-old Hung meets an alien girl from the planet Maika, searching for her lost friend. The alien helps Hung make new friends and heal a broken heart. But danger lurks everywhere.
THE SCORE: “Working on Maika was nostalgic in different ways, one in that it was directed by a long time collaborator – Ham Tran – and also in that the film pays homage to some of the great children’s adventure movies of the 80s. The director and I both wanted the music to remind us of the great adventure soundtracks of that era by John Williams and Alan Silvestri, which was a thrill to write since it’s very rare these days that composers are asked to work in that style. Listeners will hear intentional nods towards one of the themes in E.T., as the story is also about an alien visitor who befriends a child.” – Christopher Wong
THE COMPOSER: Composer Christopher Wong has established himself as the go-to composer for the rising generation of Asian American directors. His first major credit was Journey from the Fall, the debut feature from director Ham Tran – the film received a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival, while the score earned a nomination from the International Film Music Critics Association for Best New Composer of 2007. MovieScore Media has released Christopher’s scores for The Rebel, the romantic comedy How to Fight in Six Inch Heels and his last few collaborations with Victor Vu, including Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass, Loi Bao, The Immortal, Mat Biec and The Guardian last year. Maika marks the 12th album collaboration between MovieScore Media and Wong.
