Speak No Evil (Sune ‘‘Køter’’ Kølster)
Original score from the 2022 horror feature film directed by Christian Tafdrup, starring Fedja va Huêt, Karina Smulders and Sidsel Siem Koch, produced by Profile Pictures and released by Shudder (USA).
THE STORY: A Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend in a quiet place gradually becomes a living nightmare as the foreign visitors try to overcome the terrifying horrors coming down on their unsuspecting family.
THE SCORE: “From the beginning, we wanted to make a score, that was a larger than life, mythological and existentialistic, and told the ‘story behind the facade’. We wanted the music to make a statement, be a real driving character in the film, often with a voice going in a totally different direction than the pictures, to make the audience fill out the blanks between picture and sound. A great inspiration was the early operas of Italy: we wanted to make music that was like the divine choir in the greek drama, standing on the side, commenting, moralising and warning the humans, growing out of the deep subconscious and mythological core of the film. And we were never in doubt, that the organic, classical/avantgarde orchestral and vocal score was the way to go. And actually when I think about it, every single sound in the score is either sung or played by people on real instruments.” – Sune “Køter” Kølster
THE COMPOSER: Sune “Køter” Kølster produces film music that combines the art of classical composition with the energy and edginess of the extreme underground music scene in Copenhagen he is coming from. Operating with the extremes of human nature has always been his approach to composing, touching people deep in their hearts his aim, and utilising all compositional means necessary his technique. His previous credits include the Faroese thriller mystery Ludo (2014) by Katrin Ottarsdóttir and the previous movies of Speak No Evil director Christian Tafdrup, including Parents (2016) and A Horrible Woman (2017).
