THE STORY: All his life, charismatic actor Rutger Hauer kept the outside world at arm’s length. Only a small group of people were amongst his inner circle, director and goddaughter Sanna Fabery de Jonge was one of them. In this film, she unravels the mystery surrounding Rutger and reveals a man who is even more fascinating than the roles he played.

THE SCORE: “I’ve always looked up to Rutger Hauer, both as a man and as a moviestar. He is the embodiment of Dutch success in the international film industry, together with Paul Verhoeven. When he passed away in 2019, my hopes of working with him were gone. So imagine when I got in touch with Sanna, his goddaughter, who was working on his biopic. It was the closest I could get and in a way, the chance to work with him! I tried to find rhythm in the way he talked, walked, breathe and model my music after that, his strength, his sorrow and his boyishness and crafted his melody around it. All to try and have his presence in the music. The film itself goes deep into Rutger as a private person and not the movie sta, making the music intimate and emotional. Through this project I got to work with and pay hommage to the greatest actor Holland had. It was an honor to work with Sanna and Rutgers family, friends and colleagues.” – Matthijs Kieboom

THE COMPOSER: Dutch composer Matthijs Kieboom was born in 1985 in the city of Dordrecht. He started his musical education on the cello and the bass guitar before moving onto composition. His first feature film score was co-written for Fuchsia the Mini-Witch in 2010. In 2011, Matthijs won the first place and the title of Transatlantyk Young Composer for 2011 at a competition created by Academy Award winning composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. Matthijs later won the Young Talent Award at the Krakow Film Music Festival and had his music played at the closing gala. In 2013, Matthijs collaborated with DJ Armin van Buuren on the BUMA-winning score for I Love Ibiza, the top selling Dutch movie of the year. His previous releases with MovieScore Media include Everything of Value, Bloody Marie, the two family adventure films Pirates Down the Street and Ninjas Down the Street, and the IFMCA-nominated documentary Wild.
